This unique series is designed to show the beginning hand drummer a fun and creative approach to playing immediately. In Step One, Brad Dutz covers how to develop a good sense of the beat, how to produce drum tones, and how to play a rhythm. Step Two presents in-depth instructions on the proper techniques for producing a variety of tones and sounds. In addition to presenting exercises to develop technique, this program also includes authentic rhythmic patterns from a diversity of world cultures. Special DVD features include interactive drums from around the world, performance applications of education: fanga rhythm and framedrum performance, and additional product previews. DVD-ROM features are Internet connectivity and printable worksheets.

Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource for SCHOOLS and YOUNG ABSOLUTE Beginners Comment: Excellent material for schools, for 8-16 years old or for the ABSOLUTE beginner with NO background in percussion.
'Teaches' basic tones and slaps, up and down beats, elementary sounds and rythms (on Congas, Bongos and Djembe) with an intro into the Martillo (Bongo) in the second section. As he is left handed you can mirror the movements directly (if right handed).
Can be repetitious and very basic for those with any percussion experience.
It does NOT provide any sheet music or notes (a shame as this would be used by schools).
Excellent additional feature showing Giovanni Hidalgo, Changuito, on Congas, and company to get motivation going.
I would recommend Kalani's Ultimate Hand Percussion: Ultimate Bongo Jam ASIN: B000EU1OPQ DVD.
I would also recommend excellent book+CD is 'From Afro Cuban Music to Salsa' by Dr. Olavo Rodriguez [Piranha Berlin]ISBN:3980586308, 'Cuba and It's Music' by Sublette [Chicago Review Press]1556525168 and 'Afro-Cuban Jazz' by Yanow[Third Ear]087930619x.
DVD's - Ricardo Monzon 'Basic Afro Cuban Rhythms'[Berklee Music]ISBN:087639030, 'The Rythmic construction of a salsa tune' with Pablo Chino Nunez[WB]ISBN:0757915558, 'Conga Drumming' by Dworsky & Sansby ISBN:0963880101 . For the best of it's class (DVD instruction) see the 'le-salon-de-musique' offering from 'The Samba de Enredo' with Jean-Christophe Jacquin [Le Salon de Musique-France] who also have DVDs on 'Indian Tabla' with Pandit Shankar Ghosh, 'Djembe' with Inza Diabate and 'Tombak' (Iranian) with Madjid Khaladj.
