Summary: My favorite hand-held cowbell
Comment: This will definitely give you the traditional cowbell sound - not too bright and not clunky. The LP ES-3 is very widely used, so if you're looking for the sound you've heard in countless recordings, this is probably it. There's nothing complicated here - it's heavy, welded sheet steel. But the shape is just right to hold and, more importantly, vary your hold to get different sounds. A heavy striker like a hammer handle or the butt end of a drumstick on the face or front endge will get you the cowbell sound. Use the edges of the bell or even the back (small end) for a sharper, dryer sound that is good for more complex patterns. I like Timbales sticks for that. Mute or dull the sound by choking up your hold or even covering the mouth.

A very adaptable cowbell.
